BQ40Z60EVM-578: bq40z60 EVM No Discharge

Part Number: BQ40Z60EVM-578
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO, BQ40Z60

Hi,

I have a new bq40z60-EVM that will not supply voltage to the VSYS.

The BPack voltage is at Q2 (CHG) and R10 has 8 volts on it.

The voltage is also at Q3 drain but R11 (gate) is at 0 volts always regardless of any changes I make in Studio.
I am starting to believe Q3 or U2 (z60) maybe bad.

Can someone take a look at the Studio output and see if it is me missing something.

Thanks !

  • Hi Mike,

The bqstudio registers seem OK, please see if you are able to dsg the evm. For charging you need ACFET on and not ACLW set.

  • Thanks for the reply.

I can not seem to get the discharge FET to turn on.

With FET_EN low and using the Commands to toggle the DSG FET there is no output.

How do I issue Command not on the Command window?   (ManufacturerAccess() 0x00C2 ACFET_TEST Toggle)

Per Studio Help there is a manual control panel ?? I don't have one.

It seems there is a lot of confusion and mismatch between information regarding bqStudio and documentation.

That really disappoints me since I've always believed TI to be one of the best in this area. (been doing this for 37+ years)

    Thanks

  • Hi Mike,

Sorry about this. Yeah, you're right, the documents could be a lot better. You can use the advanced comm smb plugin to send the command. You can write block data to 0x44 with data 0xc2 00 to send the command.

  • OK command sent and worked   (btw no output.)

This is odd stuff.  The Bit Register and Data Memory view often do not agree/match.

Notice that "OP Status A" shows ACLW GREEN while "BIT Reg" shows ACLW RED - Both have been updated.

(Note: if I use the write function of Data Memory on ACLW it changes in the DM Window but not the BIT view)

Also in "BIT Reg" AC_TEST is active but ACFET is inactive (FET_EN is off)

Maybe I'm assuming a lot but there should be little that needs changed for the EVM to output if I load the default.

I have 4S cells and made the setup adjustments for that.  Used the correct chemistry setting also.

The EVM manual has little additional information step wise.

Any one have a working bq40z60 EVM ??

  • Hi Mike,

With FET test you can toggle the ACFET. However, the idea is to control it directly with the gauge for automatic operation. Please reflash the fw and see if that helps. The evm should work directly with defaults.

  • OK, reloaded Firmware and defaults.

Changed 3 Cell default to 4 cells.  Updated charger setting for 4 cells too (see below)

    VAC = 20v, load = 25 ohms

No VSYS output, no current draw from VAC

Also enabled Charger, then Gauge.  No Change.

  • Hi Mike,

Please allow me 2 days to get an evm and test this out here.

  • Sure and Thanks !

  • Hi Mike,

I haven't received the evm yet. I will update this post once I complete the test.

  • Well I switched the EVM to use just 2 cells.

Now with an adapter(PS) connected the PCB charges the batteries and supplies current to the 300mA load.

If I disconnect the load the charge current increases as expected.

However, when the batteries reach full charge with the 300mA load on the Vsys the unit changes to discharge mode.

The batteries supply all the load current and the adapter supplies none.

The adapter present flag indicates the adapter is present.

    (haven't retried 4 cells)

Not getting a warm fuzzy regarding stability of this part.

    Thx, Mike

  • hi Mike

Are you still running into issues? Is the EVM now functional?

    thanks

    Onyx

  • Not correctly.  Some results when switched to 2 cells.

Still will not use adapter power when discharging. (PS with up to 5A available)

Have not moved back to 4 cells as planed where nothing worked.

I will see if 4 cells now works same as 2 cells in a few days.

    Thanks

    Mike

  • ok thanks for the update. Let me know if you get good results with 4s

    thanks

    Onyx

  • I think it is time to move on to a different solution.  This part is under developed and squirrely.

Look at the Cell 1 current vs the Cell 2,3 and 4 Current.  This baby is discharging and charging at the same time.

Often to get it to charge I have to turn the power supply on and off several times and a some point it starts charging.  If I just turn it on it sits for hours and never starts charging.

Just not worth the effort to use.
