TPS22975: Failure mode

Hi support team.

What mode of failure will occur if a voltage exceeding the ABS "6V" (e.g. 20V) is applied to the VIN input?
Is it an OPEN failure or a SHORT failure?

If the above failure occurs, will it emit smoke or fire?
Please let me know if it spreads fire or burns violently.

Hi Dice-K,

Any breach of the Abs. Max. rating can cause an electrical overstress event (EOS) which damages the device. Therefore, it is recommended to not breach this spec. TI does not spec or guarantee a failure mode when this part fails due to EOS as EOS events can result in various damaging outcomes.

If you expect to see higher voltages on the input, I would highly reccomend using some sort of input power protection such as an eFuse: http://www.ti.com/power-management/power-switches/efuse-hotswap-controllers/overview.html or use some sort of voltage clamping methodology.
