UCC28710: Use in non-isolated HV-Buck (12V/10W)

Dear Team,

I am looking for a non-isolated HV buck for following specs:

  • Input range 297Vdc - 402Vdc,
  • 10W / 12V output
  • Simple, low BOM count, and preferable non-isolated

For this I came across the PMP11090 (105 to 440VAC Input, 24V/400mA), and was wondering if we can modify the design:

  • Removing the bridge rectifier and simplifying the input filter
  • changing the 24V/400mA to 12V/0.8...1A

Since it is a controller, I think we could adapt the part of the passives to handle the higher currents in the output part. However, I am not sure if the even higher ratio of Vin-Vout could give some problems?

Any comments are very much appreciated. If you have other options / controllers that are more suitable, I am open to look into the options.

    If cost is the most important parameter I recommend using UCC28700 instead of UCC28710.  PMP10937 is an example of it configured in a buck topology where the input rectifier has been simplified to a half wave.  The advantage of UCC28700 is that it uses a resistor startup instead of an integrated HV FET, which reduces cost.

    Either UCC28700 or UCC28710 will work with your design target of input 297-402VDC to 12V/10W output.  With a DC input the diode bridge in the reference designs can be eliminated.

    In addition to what I shared earlier, attached is a mathcad design calculator for using UCC287xx in a buck topology.  Please note that the calculation file hasn’t been cleaned up, so it may include some calculations that are not needed.
