BQ40Z80: GPIO pin to control DSG and CHG MOSFETS?

Part Number: BQ40Z80

Hello!

I'm trying to understand if I can use one of the GPIO pins for turning on/off the CHG and DSG mosfets.  Basically as a TTL signal on/off.    This would be very convenient, as my current schematic is goes from the bq40z80 controlled MOSFETS, into my 'soft-latch power switch' controlled mosfets.  It seems unnecessary, so I'm hoping I can control the bq40z80's MOSFETS "manually" instead.

I know I can send a communication to the bq40z80 to do as I am describing but that only works if the FET_EN bit is off, which I don't want to turn off since that seems to undermine the functionality of the bq40z80.

Does this make sense?  Basically I'm looking to use the bq40z80 as an interface to act as a system power switch by making use of its FET control...  Is this possible?  Or is the bq40z80 limited to mosfet control strictly by its protection parameters?

Thanks!
