LM3445: Why is there SOIC (D)|14 and VSSOP(DGS)|10 package

Part Number: LM3445

Dear all:

I want to choose LM3445 chip, but it has two packages, among which SOIC (D)|14 package has 4 more pins, but no connection.Given the same functionality, why are there two package designs?I don't know which package to choose.

Thank  you!

  • Hello Timsen,

Some customers don't like the lead pitch of the MSOP10 since the pins are closer together than the SOIC14.  It's a choice for manufacturing of the PCB.  If your design requires thick copper layers for heatsinking or current carry capacity the SOIC14 may make more sense.  As the copper gets thicker the minimum lead pitch goes up.  Also, though not recommended, the SOIC14 could possibly be run through the wave solder process.

    Best Regards,

  • Dear Irwin:

LM3445 is whether the SOIC14 package meets the requirements of the circuit schematic diagram, PCBLayout, and application technology description?

    Thank you!

  • Hello Timsen,

I'm not quite sure what you are asking.  The two packages function the same.  The pinout is different between the two packages but they will operate the same.  The SOIC14 is the standard SOIC14 footprint.  The end of the datasheet shows the recommended layout for a PCB for both parts.  The VSSOP would be a better choice for a board inside a bulb since the PCB will be small.

    Best Regards,

  • Hello Timsen,

I haven’t heard back from you, I’m assuming you were able to resolve your issue.
