BQ25892: BQ25892 BQ28Z610 work together

Part Number: BQ25892
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ28Z610, , BQ27531-G1

Hi,

Are (BQ25892)charger  and fuel gauge (BQ28Z610) compatible? During Gauge BQ28Z610 broadcasting desired current and voltage target values through I2C, can BQ25892 receive these values to drive VBAT ( Battery Pack Voltage ) ?

Thanks and best regards,

  • Hi Redwood,

The charger and gauge function independently.  The gauge cannot communicate directly with the charger.  Host software must be used to communicate between the gauge and charger via I2C.

    Regards,

    Jeff

  • Hi Jeff,

The BQ28Z610 has a Broadcast mode for communicating directly with a charger. This can be found in section 4.11 of its technical reference manual.
I will open up a new thread under the BQ28Z610 to get this directed to the Gauge team.

    Thanks,
    Nick

  • Hi,

I am sorry but this is not correct answer. For BQ28Z610 Gauge device has a Broadcast Feature which allows you to configure the I2C slave address of the charger in addition to the register addresses of both desired voltage and desired current. With this feature, BQ28Z610 can control the smart charger such as BQ25892 to complete the loop of charging.

    Thanks and best regards,

  • Hello,

Opening up a new thread under the gauge, found here: https://e2e.ti.com/support/power-management/f/196/p/856539/3169009#3169009

  • Hi Redwood,

Thanks for letting me know about the gauge's broadcast feature.  In chargers, we don't get a lot of training about the gauge features.  Just to be clear, you will still need to write host software to control the charger, using the gauge as the I2C master.

When you asked about the charger and gauge "working together", I was thinking of some older gauges, like the BQ27531-G1, which has the BQ2419X charger I2C register addresses in firmware and controls the charger without need for charger specific host software.

    Regards,

    Jeff
