BQ34Z100: 2s series system side fuel gauge

Part Number: BQ34Z100
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ40Z60, BQ34110, , , BQ28Z610, BQ40Z50

Hi Team,

I'm looking for 2s system side fuel gauge IC.
bq34110, bq34z100-g1, bq40z60 seems to support 2s system side fuel gauge but I couldn't find any comment that mentions system side support in datasheet.
Do these devices support 2s system side gauge?

If no, are there any devices supporting 2s system side fuel gauge?

Regards,

Kai

  • hi Kai

When you are refering to system-side gauge, are you saying that the cells will be detachable from the gauge? if that is the case, the bq34z100 will be the way to go.

If the cells will always be embedded, then any pack-side gauge will work fine. I would recommend the bq28z610 or the bq40z50 for an embedded battery solution for 2s application

    thanks

  • Hi Onyx,

I read 8.2.4 Replaceable Battery Systems of bq34z100-g1.
In that explanation, there is following comment.
"The replacing battery should be of the same chemistry and close to the original design capacity of the one to be replaced, as this ensures that the other configuration options of the device are still valid."

My customer is considering detachable battery system and sometimes new battery capacity is not close to the original design capacity of the one to be replaced.
e.g. original battery capacity: 100%. new battery capacity: 50% or someting like that.

In this case, it looks some other configuration options of the device are invalid.
What I want to know here is does bq34z100-g1 support such different capacity replacement and if we replace different capacity battery, what' happened? are there any technical concern?

    Regards,
    Kai

  • Hi, Kai

The design Capacity is a nature of the battery, it does not change with charge or discharge process, it specifies how much charge in total could the battery to be charged or discharged.

To my understanding, the capacity you are concerned with is the remaining capacity in a particular battery at a particular moment, which determines how much capacity could be discharged from present. And it always changes with charge and discharge process.

However, if the batteries chemistries and the design capacity are the same, then replacing the battery to the system side gauge is possible. The gauge would estimate the Remaining Capacity when the cell attached
