BQ24195: BQ24195 and all other ICs that have PMID pin

Part Number: BQ24195

This entry is related to the other E2E discussion that is "locked" now.

With all my respect, I believe that the answer "PMID is just a pin name" is not satisfactory for any thinking EE. I believe that IC pin names should have, and usually have, meaningful abbreviated names.

I just ran several online searches and couldn't find how PMID abbreviation is deciphered. Please help.

Thanks,

Leo

  • Leo,

PMID is internal TI shorthand for power middle.  It is the input power pin to our chargers' buck converters.  It is in the middle between VBUS input pin, followed by the reverse blocking and input current sensing FET and then the high side buck converter FET.  It is not an industry standard name.

  • Jeff,

I appreciate receiving your reply so promptly. It does help me to have a better "gut feel" for PMID output's intended function.

Your explanation makes perfect sense to me: PMID = Power MIDle. It's a mid-point in the power path. This is already a "good enough" explanation. I think it should be added to the datasheets of the ICs having PMID pin.

Your explanation also helped me to associate PMID function with Intermediate Bus Converter (IBC) function that is converting input AC power to lower-level intermediate power, which in turn is an input power for multiple POL converters in distributed power systems. This is what PMID is in many charger applications: an input power rail to various devices when they are charging from PMID rail.

I will close this issue as "resolved" next.

    Thanks,
