LP38693-ADJ: LP38693-ADJ: Is there any over current / short circuit protection?

Part Number: LP38693-ADJ

Hi,

I am starting a new project which will need LP38693-ADJ.

I have read the datasheet but I don't see description on how will this LDO behave under over current or short circuit condition.

If the Output pin is shorted to the ground, will the LDO cause voltage drop on the Input rail?

Also, if the loading is trying to draw more than 500mA from the LDO, what will happen?

Best,

Ted

  • Hi Ted,

Yes, the LP38693-ADJ has a foldback current limit:

So if you try to draw more than 500mA, eventually you will hit the (typical) 850mA current limit. Once you hit this (could be as much as +/-300mA) VOUT will start to drop. If the VIN/VOUT differential exceeds 5V, the current limit will foldback to ~350mA. Once in the mode, the device will likely protect itself by going into thermal shutdown.

I hope this answers your question.
