UCC5350: Miller clamp FET

Part Number: UCC5350

Hi,

When miller clamp woks, can the miller clamp FET be damaged by large current?

If yes, should we locate resistor to limit current between gate of IGBT and CLAMP pin?

Best Regards,

Kuramochi

  • Hi Kuramochi,

The UCC5350MC has a typical 10A current sinking capability. It is not necessary to add a resistor at the CLAMP pin.

The Miller clamp is used to prevent the gate voltage from rising above the threshold voltage during high dv/dt switching. The current to be sunk by the Miller clamp is determined by Cgc (the gate to collector capacitance of the IGBT) and the dv/dt switching across the IGBT collector to emitter. Thus, i = Cgc*dVce/dt. You can use this equation to estimate the Miller current to ensure the clamp has enough current sink capability in your application.

You can read more about the Miller clamp here.
