LMZ30606: Maximum output capacitance - Slow start

Part Number: LMZ30606

What actually limits the maximum "External output capacitance" stated to be 2000uF in the data sheet?

Too high output capacitance will draw too much current on start-up and the over-current protection kicks inn. This can be adjusted with the Slow Start pin. The data sheets has a table showing values up to 9.8ms. Could this be set higher? If so, could the maximum capacitance be higher than 2000uF? Could e.g the SS be set to 20ms and the output capacitance be 4000uF?

  • Hi Sigurd,

The maximum output capacitance limit is due to the loop compensation inside the module.  While this compensation cannot be changed, you can measure a bode plot on the device.  This allows you to assess if your output capacitance configuration (which probably cannot be simplified down to a single C and ESR component) meets your needs for stability.

The SS time can be adjusted higher.  The table just shows common values.
