LM5180: Overvoltage protection and open feedback loop

Part Number: LM5180

Hi,

I am trying to help a customer understand LM5180 behavior under an open feedback loop test. For example, removing RFB. Will this cause the output voltage to continuously rise? Or is there a protection to prevent this?

Is there a recommended circuit that can be added externally for OVP?

Thanks,

Ben

  • Hello Ben,

If the feedback resistor is open circuit, the control loop does not get a valid sample of Vout. The result if that Vout then decreases, not increases.

In terms of a dedicated OVP circuit, one option is to add a voltage supervisor than pulls EN low if needed.

    Regards,
