BQ76PL455EVM: What is the max current flow (peak & continuous)?

Part Number: BQ76PL455EVM

This device monitors and protects 16 cells in series. But, I wonder what is the maximum current (in amperes) that flows in the module. What should be the recommended track length for PCB design? If anyone can answer it, I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

  • Hi Muratcan,

Do you mean max allowable current into the device without damage? The monitor does not determine the current charging/discharging into the module/pack. Please check this design recommendations document: http://www.ti.com/lit/an/slua791a/slua791a.pdf with layout recommendations and hotplug considerations where the current may peak into the device. As for any other trace considerations, it is best practice to follow the EVM.

  • Hi Taylor,

I appreciate your recommendations, and I will follow them too. However, my questions is not answered yet. I am trying to reproduce the EVM myself for a college project. My instructors told me that the track width should not be too small because it might burn under high current. The track width should be correlated with the current that flows in it. I am also new to Altium Designer, and I do not want to make a mistake at this stage. To clarify, my question is:

What is the track width for this EVM when designing the PCB on Altium Designer.

I hope my question is clearer now. Thank you.

  • Hi Muratcan,

It depends on what the signal is. For typical traces that are just digital or low current traces, we use 10mil size minimum. But for any higher current paths (BAT, Cell balancing paths etc.) if you can spare the space on the pcb, use 20mil or more.
