LM431: Question about the maximum ambient temperature

Part Number: LM431
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TL431LI

Hi team,

My customer use LM431 device for reference voltage, and the output signal is 2.85V/5mW. When test in the worst environment, the case temperature would be 93C and the ambient temperature would be 88.5C, which exceeds the maximum operating temperature(85C). Could you please help check whether the device is ok in this application? Thanks a lot!

Best Regards

Zhengquan Lu

  • Hi Zhengquan,

The LM431 has a Tj max = 150C. This means that the device will still be operational and functional but the specifications over temperature are not guaranteed because it is above 85C. If you have concerns over the device, you can replace the LM431 with the TL431LI Q temperature grade (Q not Q1) and this will be operational from -40C to 125C which will cover your use case.
