BQ25883: SYS pin and System Load Connection

Part Number: BQ25883
Hi Team,

My customer want to use BQ25883 with the connection that the SYS and System Load is cut, and the System Load is connected to Cell directly. Is it possible? The customer is now using competitor device with this kind of connection.

I think this connection cause some problem when the system is loaded while charging.

Best Regards,
Kazuto
  • Dear Kazuto,

We do not recommend shorting the BATFET with this part. If you would like to put a System Load on the battery, that is fine. However, please make sure that the SYS and BAT pin are not shorted together.

    Thanks,

    Mike Emanuel

  • Hi Mike,

I think the System Load current is added on the charging current ICHG while the battery is charged from USB and the System Load is loaded in this connection.

    Is it really no problem?

  • Kazuto,

If you directly connect the System Load to the BAT pin, you will need some other way to distinguish the charging current from System Load. In addition, with this method, your system will have the same voltage as the battery. This means if your battery is depleted, the system will have the same voltage and may not be able to be powered up.

This part has the Narrow VDC architecture, which is the reason why the SYS and BAT pins are separated by the BATFET. In the event of a depleted battery, the SYS pin is regulated to the Minimum System Voltage (MINSYS) to allow the system to turn on. When the battery reaches MINSYS, the battery voltage is lower than the system by the VDS of the BATFET; the SYS voltage then begins to rise with the charging of the battery.

    Thanks,

    Mike Emanuel
