Hello,
Are there any known issues when using a GaN mosfet? I am considering using the LM5051 with an EPC2045 (100V) in a -48V telecom application. The EPC2045 is considerably smaller than an equivalent siicon mosfet.

Hi Scott,
Gate drive voltage of LM5051 is higher than the GaN FET rating(6V).
Need to add a zener clamp from gate to source to prevent damage.
Other than this I don't see any major issue in using GaN FET with LM5051.

Kari.
Hi Scott,
What is the reason to pick GaN MOSFET ? Is size the only advantage for your application or do you see any other benefits ?
Regards, Rakesh
Hello Rakesh,
Yes, size is the primary reason, specifically thickness. A comparable silicon part (voltage, on resistance) comes in a D2PAK which has a height of 4.6mm. The EPC2045 height is 0.9mm. The height limit on the bottom of our PCB is 2mm, so this allows us to place the OR'ing diodes on the bottom instead of the top.

Scott
