Selection of buck regulator IC

Hi, I am going to design buck regulator 24 Vin to 3,3 Vout / 100-200mA. I have just tried to find some suitable circuit for my application on this site http://www.ti.com/power-management/non-isolated-dc-dc-switching-regulators/step-down-buck/buck-converter-integrated-switch/ . There are tons of (for me) similar IC´s. Is there any "app note" or "selection guide" for my purpose ? I mean for example what´s difference between LMxxx, SMxxx, TPSxxx devices etc.

Thank you for your answer

With regards

Vladislav Šmarda

  • Vladislav,

Yes there is a lot to choose from.  TPS are devices originating from TI while LM devices are from the old National Semiconductor or new devices developed from that IP.  So that distinction will not really help you.  What really differentiates the devices are the operating range, control topology and feature set.  For your application you will want what we would call "Mid-Vin" devices that have an input voltage range up to 30 V.  Devices less than 6 A output are considered "Low Current".  Do you want synchronous rectification? What operating frequency do you need?  What control mode do you prefer?  From you post, I am guessing you would prefer something easy to use such as DCS or DCAP2 control. After that you need to decide what features you need such as adjustable soft start, power good indicator, light load efficiency, etc.  If you answer these questions, we can point you in the right direction.

  • Thank you for your answer Jonn,

The power supply what we are talking about will power the control part of 10kW induction heating inverter. Control part contains a bunch of NAND, D flip flops , XORs and comparators. All these IC´s are from LVC family, so there is very small power consuption. I want to use synchronnous buck converter with integrated switch, with constant on time control. I am not very interested in light load eficiency. Also I don´t realy need  adjustable soft start, if there was some internally set soft start, I would be happy enough. I prefer operating frequency somewhere about 500kHz, rather lower than higher. I want to enable pin with fast reaction. Power good is not nessesary, but input UVLO is.

    Thank you

  • Hi Vladislav,

You could have a look at the TPS54202 and TPS560430 datasheet.
