LM1086: What is minimum load current?

Part Number: LM1086

Hello Experts,

The datasheet stated a minimum load current. What does it mean? If load current is less than this spec, LM1086 cannot regulate the output voltage? Would you explain how device will be reacted? Customer mentioned there is a case that is 10mA. At this condition, would you tell other recommended devices?

Best Regards,
Fujiwara

  • Hello Expert,

    corrections!

    The load current of customer condition;
    There is a case that is 0~10mA.

  • HI Fujiwara-san,

    the datasheet shows a minimum load current of 5mA typical to 10mA max. If below the minimum load current, there is a chance that the output could oscillate. So I read this as if you want to guarantee stability, the load current should always be greater than 10mA.

    You should be able to ensure this with the feedback resistor as shown in figure 19:

    Here the current through R1+R2 is 5/(121+365) or ~10mA.

    I hope this answers your question.
