LM25118-Q1: VOUT short to ground protection

Part Number: LM25118-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM25118, DRV8412

Dear expert:

Will LM25118-Q1 be damaged when VOUT short to ground for 10 seconds?

Only "current limit" other than "over current protection" is described in datasheet. Looking forward for your feedback and thanks.

  • Hi Lin,

Thank you for considering the LM25118.  It should not cause damage when VOUT is shorted, because of the current limit, and the duty cycle is very low.

    Thanks,

  • Hi youhao

Two OCP mechanisms "cyble-by-cycle current limit" and "over current shutdown"are described in DRV8412 datasteet. Both mechanisms can protect IC from being damaged.

Which mechanism is better and thanks!

  • Hi Lin,

They serve different purposes, and you cannot say which one is better than the other without referring to the application needs.  Many applications requires the circuit to continuing operation under overloading, then you should not consider the shutdown feature.

    Thanks,

    Youhao
