BQ28Z610-R1: Battery management with charger, BQ28Z610-R1 & BQ25883

Part Number: BQ28Z610-R1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO, , BQ25883, BQ28Z610, TUSB320

The parts mentioned above appear to provide a nice solution for an embedded battery pack and charger when used together

as indicated by Test Report: PMP40496

I _think_ that the MSP430 of this eval board _only_ functions to read data from the devices and write formatted data to the display, however, I haven't found this said clearly.

What I want to know is:

1) If I copy the design shown in the test report and leave out the MSP430 and display, assuming that I set the BQ28Z610-R1 up correctly using BQSTUDIO, will the BQ28Z610-R1 communicate with the BQ25883 over I2C to control charging?

2) Is this written down anywhere?

3) What document spells out exactly what transactions will happen?

  • Oscar, good morning.  We have received your E2E thread and have forwarded it to the design owner for review and response. As the design owner is in China, it is already Friday evening. As is such, please expect that the designer will get back to you in the next 1-2 business days after the weekend.

Thank you for your interest in Texas Instruments' reference designs.

  • Hi,

BQ28Z610 is a gas gauge and protection IC for 2-series battery, it can't communicate with BQ25883.

You can see the block diagram in the test report. There are two separate parts. One is the charger with BQ25883, TUSB320 and MSP430. When the type-C port attached, TUSB320 will identify it as adapter or device, send the information to MCU, then MCU gives command to BQ25883 to charge or discharge. The second is battery pack with BQ28Z610, it is connected to the charging part by connectors. When connected, MCU reads the gauge of pack from BQ28Z610 by I2C
