TLC59116: Maximum Current level with all RGBs working

Part Number: TLC59116

Hello Team

I would like to know if you have more information and tests in regard to the maximum current level that the driver could work at the same time for each channel? I am interested to use some RGBs that are available to work up to 150mA, then, I was considering to connect two channels for each LED.

I've seen that the datasheet talks about RGBA, I was wondering if it doesn't have any problem if I want to work just with RGB colors? is it possible to use the other free channel for another color? i.e. Ambar output?

If you have another device that could work with this current level, please, let me know.

Thanks!

  • Hi Francisco,

Output current of all channels could be independently controlled and all can be set up to 120mA. And PWM also is independently controlled for every channel. Basically outputs are all current sink so you can connect any type of LED you want.

We have no suitable device for 150mA or above application. It is OK to parallel 2 channels for one LED to drive large current.

  • Hello Hardy

    Thank you for your feedback.

When I said all channels working, I tried to say a case like this one. If I want to generate a color with this combination, and all outputs are working at the same time (the first 10% of the cycle in this case) how much instantaneous current can support?

Could you please provide a test result like figure 22?

    Regards

    Francisco

  • Hi Francisco,

It is OK to set maximum output current at 120mA and all channels would have capability to drive 120mA independently. Please let me know the maximum current you want to set and I can help to capture a plot for you.

  • Hello Hardy

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it. I would like to test the IC at 120 mA and figure it out if possible to work with this current level. I will appreciate if you can send that plot.

On the other hand,  I was wondering if you have something like this, but with better resolution? If my understanding is correct, this device has up to 8 bit of resolution. I am looking for something that works with 16 bit.

I also was wondering if you have an EVM? I couldn't find it on the web page.

    Thanks!

  • Hi Francisco,

I only have 2 current probe here so here is 2 pic for the 3 channels current. As said before all channels could be set at 120mA and different PWM for different color. Sorry that we do not have 16 bit device for such high output current. It is OK to apply EVM at TI.com - TLC59116 catalog - design & development tag. Or just searching TLC59116EVM-390

  • Hello Hardy,

Thank you so much for the test result! I would like to confirm if the other channels were working? did you put a load on those? is necessary to know that all channels were working at the same time with the same behavior.

Thank you so much! and a good job!

    Regards

    Francisco

  • Hi Francisco,

Yes all channels were turned on and connected to LEDs.
