We are currently testing a configurable Class8 PSE using TPS23881.

We are using Sifos PSA3402 to test the PSE ports.

We have a successful test report at Class8.

But if we limit the ports to other other power classes, then the Sifos test suite report problems.

We would expect the test suite to report failures only when the requested power is higher than the demoted power limit.

But this is not the case. Other failures occur.

We would like to know if the TPS23881 has been tested at other power settings.

EX:

Class8 = Pass

Class7 = Fail at class8 tests

Class6 = Fail so many failures, no report can be generated.

Class5 = Fail at higher classes and some classification tests

Class4 = Fail at higher classes and some classification tests

We are aware that the Sifos PSA 3402 may have some issues with these scenarios, but we would like to know if TI have test reports showing full conformance at these power demotions.

Ou intention is to provide customer specific power limits depending on their available power.

EX: 1 port at BT Class8 and 1 port limited at BT Class4

Hi Richard,

I think it is expected as the sifos type 4 testing runs for all class levels. If you limit the PSE to class 6, for example, class 7 and class 8 testing will fail as expected. You must either select “4-pair type-3” pse or use the “auto discover” functionality under the PSE configuration tab in the Sifos test software to ensure the 4-pair conformance test suite is configured to properly test the pse configuration.

BTW, Sifos will be releasing an updated version (v5.1.07) of their test software today that improves type-3 configured pse conformance testing.Thanks.

Hi Penny,

Yes, I've been working closely with Sifos on this issue.

Its because we found these problems that they are doing the .07 release.

But what we needed to know is if you tested these scenarios with another LAB.

We want to know if these issues are from the PSE or the Test Instrument?

Hi Richard,

It is a test equipment issue and hopefully this issue is resolved in the new release. Ethernet Alliance PoE Certification program is another way to test the PSE and PD compliance. TI is an active member and TPS23881 has passed the pilot testing. Thanks.

Thank you, we should be good to go now.

Turns-out that Sifos had some SW to fix after our preliminary testing and that TI does not have the latest SW version in the Online software package.

Plus, the link to get le latest software was taking us to the wrong path. It was taking us to the POE2 test report.

Hi Richard,

Thanks for the updates and feedbacks. When we released the reference code, the latest FW was 0x03 and we didn't want to update the reference code every time we have a FW patch. I will update the MSP430 reference code and add a comment to ask users to always check the mySecure folder for latest FW.

When you say the link doesn't take you to the right place, do you mean the link in the note under 9.1.6 in datasheet?

I think it’s ok now.

I’m not registered with the TPS23882 and if I click the link, now it takes me to the TI request page.

Monday it was redirecting me to a POE2 test report instead of the TI request page. So I was not able to sign-up for sw release updates.

I was working with Matt to solve our test issues and I told him about it too. So maybe he got it fixed.
