In the D.S. section 8.5.3 "Setting the Charge Current", it describes two forms of overcurrent protection (OCP). The first one is determined by the charge current register setting and is cycle-by-cycle (6A, 9A, 12A). The second OCP is determined by ILIM set by external circuit. Is ILIM considered cycle-by-cycle protection or is it more real-time? Is ILIM OCP faster than than the first cycle-by-cycle OCP?

Hi Kelvin,
Please see Figure 4 to get an idea of the ILIM response time. When the ILIM pin voltage falls below 75 mV, charging is disabled. I'll double check the ILIM response time on an EVM and let you know my results.

I double checked this on a BQ24725A EVM and saw similar results to Figure 4. The ILIM response time is consistently 8-9 µs.
This is slower than the cycle-by-cycle CHGOCP response time, which can turn off HIDRV in the middle of each cycle, as described below:
