TPS61161: About TPS61161 PWM DIMMING duty cycle & wave form.

Hi TI Expert,

I need to consult about TPS61161. If PWM DIM is used, the DIM frequency stipulated in the manual is 5khz-100khz.


1. Is there any requirement for the duty cycle of the waveform? After all, this pin is still the function of EN and if the duty cycle is small,  Can EN function still effectively? .


2. Is there any requirement for the shape of PWM DIM waveform? Must it be a square wave? Do triangular waves alright? Does the sine wave alright?

    1. The min. pulse width of PWM input should be larger than 50ns(typical).

    2. Triangle and sine waveform are can be used as dimming signal. But you cannot control the output current accurately because input signal low threshold is 0.4V(maximum) and high threshold is 1.2V(minimum).

       我司的实际设计因为C121的存在,GPIO发送的占空比为0.39 频率为50kHz的方形LCD_PWM信号,畸变成了三角波(0.32V-2.12V)。

       按照以上说法,这也是ok的是么?只是因为畸变,LED电流不是0.39ILEDmax,是这样么?

    2、我们以下设计,出现一个问题。

       我们实际使用中,该电路用来点屏。根据外部环境,系统会不定期发来亮屏的触发信号LCD_PWM。

       因为亮屏效果的要求,LCD_PWM的脉宽是逐渐增大的。

       过段时间息屏,LCD_PWM的脉宽是逐渐减小的。

       这样运行一段时间之后,有概率出现屏幕点不亮的情况。此时LCD_PWM与OK的情况下是一致的(如下图),但是该电路就是没有工作,输出是12V。(Vled约25V,60mA)

       出现故障之后,对LCD_PWM进行复位重启,失效依旧。

       只有对VIN重新上电才可以解除失效。

       出现故障,芯片看似锁死了,必须要重启电源才能解锁。

       请帮分析是什么原因触发芯片锁死了?(输入12V,LED 25V 60mA,LCD_PWM 50kHz/3.3Vmax,12V稳定,不存在过流等)

    1. CTRL can connect with RC filter, but the cap. you used is too large which results in long rising time. 

    AS for triangle waveform, the output current isn't proportional to the PWM duty cycle.

    2. Could you provide the SW, inductor current and input PWM waveform when the device doesn't work?

    图像没有保存,我就文字描述一下吧。
    出现故障的时候,CTRL波形与OK是是完全一致的。如下。
    出现故障的时候,IL没有测试,测试了Vout为稳定的12V,与Vin基本相等。
    出现故障的时候,再测试一下SW。当时测到Vout是稳定12V,于是推测SW也是直流12V左右,于是没有测试。

    Since the triangle waveform isn't the required control signal and we haven't similar issues before, can you replace the current cap. with a smaller one and try again?

          You mean replace C121 with a smaller one, or replace C114-C118 with smaller ones?

          Actually,after I removed C121,the shape of CTRL waveform  was restored to square wave,and there is no failure again until now。Even so,I am not sure C121 is the reason。I don't know what the mechanism is that C121 cause TPS61161  to lock up。When C121 exists,the failure probiity is not 100%。Not only that,it is difficult to fail again after  power on again in case of failure。

    The reason that non-square waveform results in failure is complicated and it's related to the device internal logic circuit. There won't be issues as loog as you utilize TPS61161 according to datasheet.
