LM2596: Protecting LM2596 from Battery back EMF

Part Number: LM2596

I have LM2596 DCDC module to be used for power conversion of battery voltage 28V (mine is a 50Ah) to 5V

When i usually connect the input terminal wires of dcdc to battery , it gives a spark due to back emf

i wish to know what kind of protection circuit is needed at input of LM2596 to protect itself against this

in my shelf i find only MBRS340 a schottky diode with me, can it help me in protecting against back emf if connected in reverse bais in parallel to input of dcdc ?

kindly let me know simple protection of lm2596 from battery.
