BQ29209: BQ29209 max working voltage

Part Number: BQ29209
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ7718

Hi Team,

In one of my customer application the maximum charger voltage is 10.5V and BQ29209 datasheet recommend maximum VDD voltage is 10V. Can 10.5V input damage the device since absolute maximum rating is 16V.

Can you plaese help suggesting 2cell device which can work on 10.5V max charger supply voltage and with over voltage protection of 4.2V.

Thanks in advance for the help and support.

Regards, Shinu Mathew.

  • Hi Shinu,

Since the 10.5V is within the absolute max conditions, it will probably not damage the device. However, it exceeds the recommended operating conditions, so it is not ideal. Additionally, the BQ29209 has a OVP threshold of 4.3V which doesn't seem to match the customer requirement.

Instead, let me recommend the BQ7718, specifically the BQ771808 or 09. This device can be programmed to be a 2-,3-,4- or 5-S overvoltage protector. The 08 and 09 versions have the required 4.2V OVP threshold. The only difference is the 08 has a NCH active low output and the 09 has a CMOS active high. Additionally, since this device can handle up to 5S, the recommend max operating voltage is 25V which is well within the customer requirement.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions.
