BQ28Z610-R1: Operation in battery fully discharged

Part Number: BQ28Z610-R1

Hi,

Could you let me know below understanding is correct?

1. If VC2 is below Vswitchover- due to discharged battery, IC doesn't operate and I2C also doesn't operate. CHG, DSG is floating and pack+ and cell+ is opened.

2. When charger is connected and push S1 in EVM, VC2 is supplied from charger and CHG, DSG goes to high and pack+ and cell+ is connected.

If my understanding is correct, could you let me know what Q4 is for?

Thanks.

  • Hello David,

Which voltage are you referring to with Vswitchover? I don't believe there is a parameter with that name. The IC shuts down when the Vpack voltage drops below 2V, this is the minimum supply voltage for the gauge (1,8V-2.2V). If the gauge shuts down the FETs will be off and it can not communicate via I2C.

By pressing S1 on the EVM you start the initialization of the gauge, when the gauge sees the same voltage on BAT+ and PACK+ is when it wakes up.

If you are referring to Q4 on the EVM I will need to check and get back to you.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller

  • Hello David,

Q4 is for reverse polarity protection to turn off the DSG FET if the charger were connected in reverse.
