LM1117: Tantalum v/s Ceramic Capacitors

Hello,

I have a query regarding the application of LM1117-3.3V regulator. The applications information suggests the use of Tantalum Bypass Capacitors. Can I instead use a ceramic bypass capacitor? And, what would be things I would have to keep in mind in case I prefer the said option?

Hi Harsh,

These older devices were designed before the era of ceramic capacitors were dominate as the output capacitor.
As such you will want the ESR of the output capacitor to fall within 300 miliohms to 22 ohms to maintain stability.
If you choose a ceramic capacitor you can emulate this ESR requirement by placing a series resistor with the output capacitance.
