TPS23734EVM-094: Reset winding Question

Part Number: TPS23734EVM-094
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS23734
Dear *,
I have questions regarding ACF design TPS23734EVM-094
On The TPS23734  EVM the transformer T2 has additional primary winding (pin 4 and 5).
If i understand correctly this is a reset winding is that right? Can you tell why do we need this in ACF configuration?
it says that the benefit of the Active Clamp technique is: " No additional reset winding or dissipative clamps are required for transformer reset"
Best Regards,
David.
  • Hello David,

Pins 4&5 of the transformer is called the auxiliary winding. This is there in order to power the IC. The IC itself is not powered by VDD. It is powered by VCC and that voltage is regulated down after that. Please see the block diagram in the datasheet for more details.

Since this powers the IC, it is required in all designs. However, this is not a reset winding so the benefit of the active clamp is preserved.

If this post answers your question, please indicate so by marking this thread as resolved. Thank you.
