TPS54620: TPS54620 Burned

Hi

   Can you please share the schematic of the design? Can you share the inductor part number & its current rating?

Is this happening on all the parts or only 1 part in the design?

Is this during prototyping or in production or a field failure?

Hi Tony,

A 8.2uH inductor is a pretty normal value for a high output voltage design like this so it shouldn't be caused by this. I've taken a look over the schematic and don't see any problems with it.

The one think to be careful of in this design is the 16V input. This is quite close to the rating and be careful to make sure the rating is not exceeded during transients. If you experience more regulators failing, it would be good to take a closer look at the PVIN voltage to check and make sure.

I can also take a look at your layout to see if there is any risk there.

Hi Tony,

There is not really a max soft-start time for the TPS54620 itself. The one potential behavior that may be seen if the SS cap is very large (>100 nF), is the SS cap may not discharge all the way before the TPS54620 begins switching after enabled. This would result in a small step up at the beginning of the output voltage ramp up after being enabled. This is not a problem for the TPS54620.
