BQ25505: Support for RF power harvesting

Hi team,

I am posting this on behalf of the customer request below if we have something to offer for their application.
Please see the attached overview of the customer project.

They want to use the Same RF for Communication and Power harvesting. Also, the slave devices can be placed in close environments like darkroom or Mattel tray.
This can't use Wi-Fi or Bluetooth due to they have not generated sufficient power for my slave device.
The customer is looking for a suggestion for this.

Other information:
Basically they want to use this on ESL(Electronic Self Level) Display.
Their Agenda is to communicate every nearby ESL.
ESL will be work on RF harvesting.
using this power they can change the display segments.

Please let me know your inputs.

Hi Jonathan,

In theory, if the RF harvester provides a DC voltage and has a known/consistent maximum power point, the BQ25505 could be used to charge capacitors. In cold start, meaning the output capacitors are discharged, the RF harvester would need to provide more than 0.6V and > 15uW total power. Once the capacitors charge > 1.9V, the RF harvester voltage can drop down to 0.1V but it will to provide enough power to keep VSTOR=1.9V and IQ> 400nA just to maintain operation.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for your suggestion.

In your suggested part, BQ25505 is work with Solar cell or Pizo sensor-based harvesting.

we can use this if we will find a way to generate equal power from RF.

But as per our application, we have required RF powered charging (harvesting ) device, also the same RF signal will be used in communication. (There are a lot of controllers based on open frequency-based low power MCUs but they have not any facility for RF harvesting.)

I understand but have to warn you that I am not aware of a customer who as been successful with RF energy harvesting using the BQ255xx famly. Good luck! Let me know if you have more specific questions.
