BQ78350-R1: Bricked BQ78350-R1

Part Number: BQ78350-R1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ76930, ,

hi,

We are having some strange claims for 7S2P Packs with BQ76930+BQ78350-R1:

- Both packs are discharged to 1-2V

- First pack is totally bricked, BQ78350-R1 not responding, and downloading SREC from BQ is impossible

- Second pack, is partially bricked, Registers and Data memory not working, but I can download SREC from BQ.

I Was trying to upload that SREC to another pack which was working fine, but after programing this pack is bricked totally as the first one.

what might cause such mis-behavior? what should we look at?

thanks a lot in advance

KR

Vincenzo

  • Hi Vincenzo,

If the SMBus connection is lost during programming, it might not be possible to communicate with a pack that was partially programmed. That may explain the last pack you mention.

Did the other two packs fail after working normally? I suggest switching to the BQ78350-R1A (comes shipped with the latest device firmware). The only difference is the Shutdown routine has been made more robust in the BQ78350-R1A. There are rare cases where instruction flash can be corrupted during a Shutdown which may explain the two failing packs.

    Best regards,

    Matt

  • hi,

we are using auto Shutdown after 24h without activity.

We've checked AFE's, they are working fine in both packs, so problem is in bq78350-r1.

    thanks a lot in advance

    have a good day

  • Hi Vincenzo,

Since this issue is observed after a Shutdown, I suspect there may be flash corruption. A few users have reported observing a similar behavior in the past and switching to the latest firmware has been able to completely resolve this issue. I recommend switching to the BQ78350-R1A (ships with v1.04 firmware) and updating R1 devices to v1.04 firmware which can be downloaded from the product folder. v1.04 firmware was created specifically to improve the robustness of the Shutdown routine.

    Best regards,

    Matt
