BQ40Z80EVM-020: PBI cap

Part Number: BQ40Z80EVM-020

Hi,
I want to understand how to choose the correct amount for the capacitor C20. I started the development of my board basing on your design. The cap C20 is the biggest component, that maybe, can be reduced for my application based on two cell 18650-25R (3.6V+3.6V).
What is the rational to understand the dimensioning of that cap ?
The datasheet suggests only to put a 2.2uF. In the EV board the cap has 100V of maximum voltage (why?).
Can I put this alternative PN: C0805C225K3RAC7800 (Voltage max 25V)?

  • Hello Fabrizio,

The PBI capacitor is used in case there is a momentary drop in voltage on the main power input pin. It is also used to drive large capacitance DSG and CHG FETS to prevent brownout. For your lower voltage application it should be fine to decrease the voltage rating of the cap.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller
