TPS2553: Ilim dispersion on TPS2553DRVR

Part Number: TPS2553

Hi,

For a new project we are working on, we need some support for the device TPS2553DRVR.

We intend to use the TPS2553DRVR as high side switch with limiting current. Our requirements are:

  • Vin = 3.3V
  • Vout =  3.3V
  • Iout-max = 61mA
  • Temp min = -40°C
  • Temp max = +125°C (junction)

If we set the ILIM pin to VIN, then we get the minimum current limiting value for this device, which is 75mA. That would be ok, the problem is, that the absolute minimum limiting current might be 50mA, which is too low for our application.

On the other hand, if I use an external resistor to program the current limit, then with the maximum Rilim recommended in datasheet, we get 100mA as minimum current(120mA typical) which is too high.

The questions are the following.

  1. How does the limiting current value (when ILIM is connected to VIN) change with temperature?
  2. Is the current limiting tolerance just an issue of temperature or is the dispersion between devices (different lots)?
  3. Is there any way (o perhaps other devices) to program the device between the 50mA and 100mA Ilim-min (as explain above). What I mean is, if I can set a different Rilim resistor (greater than 232Kohm) to set the limiting current to a lower value.

Thanks in advance and have a nice day.

Santiago

  • Hi Santigo, First, the current limit value is be on mim value to max value whatever temperature changed. Second, there are many device to choose. Could you share more details to help to select the right device. Like range of VIN, current limit, specific application, etc. Best regards, Ansel
  • Hi Santiago,

    1. Please see Page13. The characteristic table max-min value already includes current-limit tolerance due to variations caused by temperature and process.

    2. Just an issue of precision of Rilim resistor.

    3. I think that may work, but not guaranteed by TI.

For TI's policy, I will first click resolved button.

If you have any other concern, contact me any time.

    Thanks.

  • Hi Ansel,

thanks for your fast answer. The specs are in the post.

    VIN range is 3.3+/-10%

    ILIM range: min = 61mA; max = 100mA

Temperature range is important, as the device will be integrated in a measurement equipment for automotive sensor debugging. Although is automotive industry related, the part doesn't need to be AEC-Q

If you can guide me with the search of some other part, I would appreciate it. At least I couldn't find a better one.

    Regards, Santiago

  • Hi Santiago,

The current limit Max and Min spec already include the temperature influence.

I will have a test of the board.
