BQ27441-G1: Charge capacity (Full and Remaining) Sudden drop

Part Number: BQ27441-G1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: GPCCHEM

Hello Support Team,

We use LiPo batteries (3.7V 2000mAh) in some of our products which are designed to run a long time on battery without the need to be recharged. The battery is combined with a TI BQ24295RGE Battery Charger and the TI BQ27441-G1 Battery Gauge.

In poor storage conditions, the device consumes between 1mA and 1.5mA. In cleaner storage conditions, the current is more around 100µA. After few charge/discharge cycles, the gauge algorithms follows the battery behavior.

Given this, the device works well for few weeks but at some point in time (after 3, min, to 4/5 weeks) the battery full charge capacity estimated from the gauge suddenly drops. The drop can be as big as 500mAh.

The problem is that this drop jeopardizes the battery remaining capacity estimation and the running time left before the device is automatically shut off.

Do you have some insights about the battery behavior and/or chemistry that could explain this drop? Or on the other side, I may have missed something in the gauge configuration (by the way, the smoothing is enabled).

The experiment is as follow:

  • Few charge/discharge cycles to make the gauge learn the battery parameters
  • Fully charge the battery
  • Leave the device and just monitor the battery capacity (full charge and remaining charge) each day

Best regards,

Alex
