LP5907: Does LP5907 need to be used with a surge protection circuit? How to design the specific protection circuit?

Part Number: LP5907

Dears

Because the power port requires a differential mode voltage of 500V and a common mode voltage of 1000v for surge protection.

Does LP5907 need to be used with a surge protection circuit? How to design the specific protection circuit?

The following are the protection requirements: The surge waveform is 1.2/50us, if it can be compatible with 10/700us.

Thanks

  • Hi Elsa,

This is a broad topic and the answer cannot be completely provided in an E2E forum.  But in general, transient voltage protection is used to protect sensitive hardware like the LP5907 to these voltage spikes.  Transient voltage hardware that is most often used are Metal Oxide Varistors (MOV) and Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVS).  These are shunt devices that act as low impedance when a voltage threshold has been exceeded.  Often a series surge resistor is used to limit the current.  So when a 1kV surge is experienced, the MOV or TVS will shunt it to GND and clamp it to some value which protects the downstream electronics.

I hope this provides a good starting point.

    Thanks,
