TPS61165: SEPIC configuration - how to calculate power dissipation and output voltage limits?

Part Number: TPS61165
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS61500

Considering the TPS61165 *SEPIC* configuration, what are the formulas for calculating power dissipation and Vout max & min?

The input voltage is between 12.5V and 13.6V, the output current is 350mA, and the ambient temp is 40°C. What is the maximum and minimum output voltages to which we can design the circuit?

Thank you!

  • Hi Lenio,

There is no power dissipation formula.

As for output voltage range, it's recommended to use TPS61165 Pspice model for simulation based on your design parameters.

Based on PSpice for TI, there is a simple and fast way to run simulation:

    1 find the TPS61165

2 click the device right and  chose "open reference design"

3 modify the components as your requirements

  • The TPS61165 does not have specific information about the SEPIC operation, but a similar device, the TPS61500, does. The following app note goes through the details of the design:

TPS61165 PSpice model may or may not have been optimized for SEPIC operation. My attempts to simulate the circuit showed unstable results. The use of PSpice is a good verification of a mathematical approach. If used as the solely tool for determining the circuit it becomes a lengthy trial and error effort.
