BQ25306: Parallel two devices to increase the current

Part Number: BQ25306
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24610, BQ24650

Hi Team,

A customer would like to know if it is possible/allowed to use two BQ25306 in parallel in order to increase the charge current to 6A. If it is possible, can we just connect EN, POL and TS pins in parallel as well.

I have suggested our battery chargers which can charge above 6A. We are still waiting for the customers feedback if it meets his requirements.

Regards,

Danilo

  • Hi Danilo,

Theoretically you can parallel these chargers. The common use of EN/POL and TS is fine. The main consideration when paralleling chargers is to make sure they don't have the same termination current threshold. This is because one charger always attempts to terminate before the other due to the mismatch in each charger’s internal reference voltages and currents. If both chargers are set to the same termination current, both chargers will have difficulty terminating the charge.

As 3A is the max charge current and ITERM is fixed at 10% of ICHG, there is not much flexibility with controlling the termination current thresholds. In such a situation it is more likely to use 3 parallel chargers with 3 different charge currents (that sum up to 6A total) to get 3 different termination thresholds, which might not be as ideal of a solution.

For standalone chargers you can also consider the BQ24610 or BQ24650.

  • Hi Kedar,

    Thank you for the clarification.
