LM5143-Q1: Dual Output confirmation.

Genius 9880 points
Part Number: LM5143-Q1

Hi Team,

Good day, we received query from customer and want to confirm the following.

Can the device handle a dual output of

1, VIN 20-28VDC for a VOUT1=5.5VDC 30A and VOUT2=5.5VDC 30A?

2. VIN 20-28VDC for a VOUT1=5VDC 40A and VOUT2=2.5VDC 30A?

The main concern is the current. The customer tried to mock the device in WEBENCH but the switching FETs are ideal with 75V 51A ratings.

Thank you and looking forward for your kind response.

Regards,

Maynard

  • Hello Maynard,

Let me forward this to the engineer covering this controller. Please expect a response early next week.

  • Hi Maynard,

Please use the LM5143-Q1 quickstart calculator for assist tocomponent selection. Given the Vin-max of 28V, 40V FETs are suitable here, with two FETs in parallel (at least for the low-side position). To manage switching losses, I recommend a low switching frequency in the 150-200kHz range.

The 40A channel is particularly challenging from a thermal standpoint -- please check the max ambient temperature spec. This would normally be implemented with a 2-phase solution at 20A/phase.

Note that the 5V output can be fed to VCCX to reduce controller dissipation. The bias power loss is then Vcc*Icc, where Icc is the total VCC current comprising mostly of gate drive current (= Qg*Fsw for each FET). Also, you can use SYNCOUT of controller #1 to synchronize controller #2.

    Regards,

    Tim
