LM2596SX-5.0: Webench, Vout Ripple, MLCCs

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM2596

Hi there,

I tried to let webench design my LM2596 circuit.

At almost every input paramters, there were small (like 3x10uf) mlcc as Cin and also a small Cout.

No wonder, 600mW V out ripple. Thats to much. Nothing that I entered into the "Vout max Ripple" field changed the BOM or the very high ripple.

Thats really weired!

So I manuall inserted 330uF electrolytic capacitors and see.. 10 to 15mV, which is okay.

But there is another weired thing. Whenn inserting COut with 330uF and 23mOhm ESR, there was a warning from the webench, that 1300 to 1700mOhm are recommended. Thats not true, right?

The datasheet indeed says that there are problem with extrem low ESR at Cout, but recommends Low ESR. I wouldn't call 1300 to 1700mOhm "low esr".

Can you help me with that?

  • Hi Dominik,

What's the Vin, Vout and load current of your application?

LM2596 is voltage mode control which has limitation on inductor and Cout/ESR combination for stable loop. you may use post L/C filter on output for lower output ripple.
