[FAQ] TPS53318: [Grounding the ROVP Pin on TPS53318 & TPS53319

Part Number: TPS53318

What is the recommended connection for the ROVP pin?

  • Our recommendation is to ground ROVP pin if the ROVP pin not used. Do not float the ROVP pin.

What is the issue if you leave ROVP floating?

Floating the ROVP pin can cause an indeterminate state on the pin, due to noise near the pin. This interaction greatly depends on the PCB layout. Follow the datasheet for best layout practices.

How do I know if my application/design is sensitive to ROVP pin floating?

If ROVP is being triggered when it should not be, or if there are noisy traces near the ROVP pin, then your design is sensitive to ROVP pin floating.

Should I change an already released design?

If your design has already been released, and you are not having any issues with the ROVP pin, you do not have to recall your product from the field. New designs should ground the ROVP pin if it is not used.

Note:  Measuring ROVP, even with a multi-meter or oscilloscope probe will add significant capacitance and leakage resistance to the ROVP pin and significantly reduce the noise seen by the pin, which is why the datasheet has been updated to explicitly caution against floating the ROVP pin.
