TPS40170: High current battery charger-PMP5313

Part Number: TPS40170
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PMP, , LM5143-Q1, TPS40057, PSPICE-FOR-TI

PMP 5313 is limited to a 10 Ampere current charger. I want to use the PMP5313 for a high current charger, please suggest required amendments for the same. PMP5313 charges two batteries simultaneously but at a lower current level, please suggest the amendments for a higher current even if it is for a single battery charger.

  • Hi,

For TPS40170 part, if you want to amend it for higher current you need to consider a lower Qg MOSFET, a higher current limit and a better thermal dissipation. You can start from a higher current limit with TI WEBENCH tool (see below link) then evaluate if the MOSFET rating and thermal is OK in your new application.

  • I have used PMP5313 as reference design but as PMP5313 was limited to 10A current ,I have used LM5143-Q1 as buck controller in PMP5313 to get a max charge current up to 50 Amps. But the LM1543-Q1 is not pin to pin compatible with TPS40057, I am worried about the working of the circuit.

Can you please suggest a way forward.

  • Hi,

I think LM5143-Q1 is OK in your application as you already achieved a higher current. For LM5143-Q1 you can use below calculation tool to design:

  • Thanks Iven the design tool really helps.

In case of interleaved operation mode, How should the connections be made for Vout1, Vout2 and CS1 and CS2.

In PMP5313 the FB and comp pins are used for voltage and current PWM control, How can we get these controls in case of LM5143-Q1??

  • Hi,

For interleaved operation mode connection, you can refer to 9.2.2 section of the datasheet.
For LM5143-Q1 FB and COMP connection, I guess you can use same architecture of the close-loop control but due to different control between TPS40170 and LM5143-Q1, the parameters might be different. My suggestion is you can start with building a prototype circuit to verify it in PSpice-for-TI to verify it.
