UCC28180: High Power Range ~11kW

Part Number: UCC28180
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC28070

Hi team , i want to design a PFC with the ucc28180 controller.

But I've some worries in the design  , it's it possible to make a 11kW PFC with this controller. I know that ı can use the ucc28070 but i want to stay in ucc28180. So,If I make a universal input , 390V output and 11kW design, what should I pay attention to in this process?

Best Regards.

  • Hi, Mikail

I think you are already aware of the concern to design 11kW with UCC28180 since you have UCC28070 in your mind.

There are several points you need to pay attention to:

    1. the ripple current of input filter is high, you need to design input filter carefully for EMI.

    2. size of PFC inductor is very big

    3. current sense signal at light load is very low, the THD/PF at light load would not good.

    4. PFC switch could be IGBT which the switching frequency is low and the size of the PFC would be huge

Based on above all, I strongly suggest you to use UCC28070 which is the most popular in OBC.

  • Hi Sır , Yunseng Qu thank you for you fast relpy and suggestions.

So, if we make a assuming like the parameters below.

1- I'm using this section without EMI its just a the stage front of an inverter , lets say its used as a (Booster).
2- The Size of the pfc does not matter i will design a 2mH pfc inductor. ( with air gapped E core ) which can handle 130A.
3- At light load power factor 0.95 is enough do you think that the power factor will go below 0.95 at light loads?
4- Instead IGBT ,I will use paralel mosfets wich can handle more than 130A in lower input voltages and lets say (2+2+2 mosfets with 3, 5A driver's).
5- there Are some Pictures that ı've shared below respectivly design parameters-> Current of the fet in worst condition. ->  inductor current with %80 ripple in wors condition.

Do you think my design will be bad considering the above mentioned things?

    thanks in advance ,

    Mikail

  • Hi, Mikail,

Yunsheng will get back to you early next week. Sorry for the delay.

  • Hi, Mikail

    1. The power factor will below 0.95 when the load is below 25% of full load at high line input.

    2. Regarding to your design, I think it is fine to me.

    Yunsheng

  • Hi Yunsheng thank you.
