Absolute maximum rating for USB

Hi,

many power, MCU etc. ICs have VCC max 5.5 V (6 V absolute maximum rating). Is it good practice to connect these ICs directly to USB bus power? USB states 5.25 V max on the bus, which complies with ICs rating, but my feeling is there is only a small reserve to reach ICs max rating....

Thanks for your comments.

  • In general, the IC which sees the USB port either needs protection to withstand a higher voltage or be rated for the higher voltage. You can see this on many battery charger ICs--they are rated to a withstand a higher voltage. This is needed to survive a hot plug event wherein the USB voltage will ring past its DC voltage due to the cable inductance.
