BQ27541 v200 Reading Data on a cell fitted with F/G using a PC

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ27541, BQEVSW

We have a BQ27541 V200 fuel gauge fitted to a Lithium Ion cell.  Is it possible to read the data from the F/G using a PC running Windows 10 64 bit operating system?

I have purchased an EV2300 USB interface module and downloaded the windows 64 bit drivers, I have got the PC to recognise the EV2300. I have also downloaded the BQEVSW software.

Do I need anything between the cell and the EV2300 to be able to read the data, given that the cell already has a F/G connected to it?

If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

  • Hi David,

Pls reference the EVM user guide in the link below: It has detailed instructions on setting up the EVM which is also applicable to your board with the bq27541 on it.

let me know if further help is needed.

    thanks

    Onyx

  • Thank you very much for your help.

The cell that I am using already has a BQ27541 F/G fitted to it, do I still need the EVM to read the data?

The EVM seems to have it's own F/G incorporated, can this be bypassed so that I can read the data on the one fitted to the cell?

  • No you do not need the EVM. You just need to set your system up like the set up of the EVM in the user guide.
Connect your board to the ev2300 and then your ev2300 to your computer.

    thanks

  • Thank you very much, I will try that
  • I have tried wiring the battery (single cell with F/G fitted) to the EV2300 as shown in the BQ27541EVM manual that you kindly supplied.

The EV2300 is recognised by the PC but when I start up the BQEVSW software with EV2300 connected and with the battery connected it comes up with an error box.

'No Communication with EVM gas gauge could be established. Please check connections.  If EVM GG was not used before, apply power to Pack + and Pack - terminals to exit the shutdown mode. Communication error code(decimal) = No Acknowledge: VB_T2H_NACK. Proceed at own risk

If I proceed it says 'Detected Device not compatible with this application. Proceed at own risk'

I have applied power to the Pack + and Pack – on the battery output.

I also know that this is a working battery F/G design we have used it on a number of products.

I have the output of the cell connected as follows:

    Battery Output           EV2300 Unit

Pack +                       Vout (also tried not connecting to Vout)

    SDA                           SDA

    SCL                            SCL

    Pack -                        Gnd

The battery circuit has a NTC thermistor built in which is connected the BQ27541 chip.

Are you able to advise if I am missing something obvious?

  • Hi David
Can you make sure you do not have another uC on the comm lines as that will cause bus collisions.

Also check to see if your device is receiving power, ie measure the voltage on teh reg25 pin to ensure it is measuring 2.5V.

    thanks
