BQ40Z80EVM-020: How to connect BQ40z80EVM-020 and PC

Part Number: BQ40Z80EVM-020
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ40Z80, , EV2400, BQSTUDIO

I installed Battery Management Studio (Ver.1.3.86.3).

Next, I connected BQ40Z80EVM-020 and tried to select bq40z80 from supported targets IC in Battery Management Studio.

However, bq40z80 was not exist so I could'nt use BQ40Z80EVM-020.

Could you teach me how to connect BQ40Z80EVM-020 and PC?

  • Please refer to EVM user guide http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/sluubt4/sluubt4.pdf

Ensure the correct connection - SMBus and Power. Not sure what kind of EV2400 you are using.

For external EV2400, the jumper settings for J18/J19 should be to connect pins 2 and 3, and the jumper settings for J22 should be to connect pins 1 and 2. Alternately, the on-board EV2400 can be used by connecting a micro-USB cable to the EVM directly to a computer. To use the on-board EV2400, the jumper settings for J18/J19 should be to connect pins 1 and 2, and the jumper settings for J22 should be to connect pins 2 and 3.

  • Your reply is not answering the OP's question and I have a similiar:
How to manage the BQ40Z80 in Battery Management Studio? I got some pre-production parts and want to test my design. How to proceed?

The EMV user guide says in chapter 2.2 "Version 1.3.83 or greater of Battery Management Studio software is required to use all the bq40z80 features."
I have installed v1.3.86, like the OP, and even this version does not provide the BQ40Z80 in the list of supported devices and there is no such device configuration file in config folder. Hence it cannot be configured and managed. So either your EMV user guide is outdated or the Battery Management Studio software not yet ready. The BQ40Z80 is also not in the list of supported devices @ www.ti.com/.../bqstudio
  • Attachment is the bqz file for bq40z80. Please unzip and copy 4800_0_02-bq40z80.bqz to C:\ti\BatteryManagementStudio\config if install path is default.

After restart bqStudio, bqStudio can recongize bq40z80 and enter main window without opening Target Select  Wizard. Otherwise, plesae check if EV2300/EV2400 connection is working.

  • Thanks for your support. BQ40z80 is now listed as supported device.
Unfortunately the Learning Cycle feature is not available for this device. SLUA848 requires and describes how to perform one. I wonder whether this feature will be available in a later bqStudio release or configuration file?
I build the required jig to run the learning cycle automatically and would like to do so.
  • I assume this answer is valid for the BQ40Z80 as well?

  • For the moment you will need to create your own automation or else manually perform the learning cycle profile, but we do hope to add the Learning Cycle plugin for bq40z80 in the future.
For your reference, you can get more recommendations in the bq40z80 learning cycle guide here:
