UCC28722: how to find and select an industrial grade IC?

Part Number: UCC28722
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC28701, UCC28711, UCC28730, UCC28720, UCC28710, UCC28700

Hi Everybody,

one should to find and select ( for example a switching controller ) an IC with industrial grade ( no home appliances ). how can anyone find it from datasheet information?

is automotive option a solution for the question?

for example which of the bellowing part numbers are industrial grade:

UCC28722

UCC28701

UCC28711

UCC28730

Regards, Ras

  • my question is general but now i should to select an offline flyback controller.

  • for example, please consider the bellow clipboard form the UCC28722 datasheet:

does it show the UCC28722 is not suitable for industrial applications?

    Regards, Ras

  • Hello Ras,

The UCC287XX device that you mentioned are all designed for the same temperature range.  --40 to 125 degree C.

These older Unitrode parts use to designated for commercial UCC3XXXX, industrial UCC2XXXX and military UCC1XXX.  However, these parts are designed for commercial use and industrial use.  The lower UCC387XX commercial grade does not exist for these devices.

When it comes to automotive we have Q1 rated devices and if they exist you will see -Q1 at the end of the part number.

I hope this clarifies the issue for you.

    Regards,

  • Hello Mike,

    thank you for the reply.

please see the applications could be seen in the first page of the UCC28722 datasheet. i have inserted a clipboard of it in may previous post.

there is no any industrial application suggested in it.

    Regards, Ras

  • Hello Ras,

The applications in the data sheet are suggestions on where the devices can be used.  It does not mean the devices cannot be used in other applications.

If the device and application meet your thermal requirements and power requirements you should be able to use in an industrial application even though it is not listed.

    Regards,

  • Hello Mike,

    Thank you for the reply.

Your statement "The applications in the data sheet are suggestions" means best suited for those applications.

Is there a solution ( or controller ) best suited for an industrial offline flyback controller?

    Regards,

  • Hello,

What is the input voltage range, output voltage, output power range and ambient temperature  that you are trying to setup your flyback converter for?

Is the industrial supply a bias supply or is going to supply for a DC a motor or for lighting or some other application?

    What your efficiency requirements?

We have many reference designs that can help you find a design for your existing application.  Please  use the following link if you would like to find an existing design that is close to your application that can get your started on your design.

  • Hello Mike,

Do I say true that your statement "The applications in the data sheet are suggestions" means best suited for those applications?

    The input voltage= [185 265]V 50Hz

    Output voltage= 5V 1A

    Ambient temperature=[0 70] degC

    It is a bias supply.

    The minimum efficiency= 60%

Please consider UCC28722 or UCC28701 as starting selection. Is there alternative to these parts which be best suited for my industrial application?

    Regards,

  • Hello Ras,

The UCC28722 drives IGBTs and is better suited for extremely high voltages and would work for your application.

However, the UCC28701 is designed to drive FETs and will also work for your application.

They both use trickle charge startup.  There is a UCC28720 5V, 5W EVM and a UCC28700 5V, 5W evaluation module that works off the a 85V to 265V RMS input.  The UCC28720 does have an internal VDD capacitor trickle charge circuit which has low standby power.  If you are interested in a trickle charge startup on a FET based solution you can choose the UCC28710.

You have many choices here and they will all work.  These devices due to use constant current (CC) constant voltage (CV) that is ideal for charging batteries.  Please note that these devices have been used for eMeters and high power bias supplies (65W) as well.

These devices were generated for the customers that the applications sections listed.  However, to say they can only be used for this application would not be correct.

  • Dear Mike,

    Thank you for the answers.

I see in the datasheet of the UCC28722 it drives BJTs.

    Can UCC28722 drive IGBTs?

    Regards,

  • Hello,

IGBTs can operate at high frequencies and can be driven with a normal FET driver.  The devices that were designed for FETs would be a better choice for IGBT (UCC28701).
