CCS/UCD3138A: UCD3138OL40EVM-032: No Rom detected

Part Number: UCD3138A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCD3138OL40EVM-032, , UCD3138

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

I use the boad of UCD3138OL40EVM-032. I put new UCD3138A in it . Then I pen the GUI of UCD3XXX device GUI. the version is v3.0.30(2018-03-02). I put button of "Scan device in rom" and the log display "Error: unable to communicate with rom".

Then i test the VDD is 3.3V. Also use provided jmper jump across J39. The led of EVM is lighted on. I also change the UCD3138A to UCD3138. what can i do next?

  • Hi Liwei Qi,

Please double check the positioning of the chip in the socket.

Pin #1 of the socket is shown in the PCB silkscreen.

You may also want to add the pull up resistor jumpers for PMBus (J9, J10,J42).

    Regards,

  • Hi

I have checked the UCD3138 Postion and it is OK. I see the Pin #1 stamp in the PCB.

I also add the jumper in J9,J10 and J42.

    But the issue don't solve.

  • Hi Liwei Qi,

Please check the voltage on BP18 pin (There should be 1.8V on this pin).

If BP18 does not have 1.8V, that means the chip is not powered up properly.

Also, you may remove the jumpers that connect to the chip from the 3.3V delivered by USB port and supply a voltage using a power supply connected to the screw terminals. This way you will be able to monitor the current consumption. Should be around 70 mA when in ROM mode.

    Regards,

  • Hi, Yitzhak Bolurian:

I have tested BP18 Pin and Ground . it is 1.8V.

I also remove the jumper(J39) and chang the voltage supple from USB port to extern 3.3V.

    The issue don't solve.

You can see the picture. I add jumper J6,J9,j10,J42,J33,j34. Is it OK?

    Thank you very much!

  • How many mA does the board drive from your power supply? Please advise.

Please also take a look at the following user guide that includes the schematic of the board.

    https://www.ti.com/lit/ug/sluua80/sluua80.pdf

I could see from the picture that you have attached that supply voltage is connected to pins 1 and 4 of the screw terminal.

The best option is to connect 3.3 to pin 2 or 5V to pin 3 (Pin 1 is GND).

    Regards,

  • Hi, Yitzhak Bolurian:

If add the jumper of j39, the current is 82mA. if not, the current is 68mA.

I have seen the use guide.  After read it, i add the jumper of J6,J9,j10,J42,J33,j34.

I try to give the board supply with extern dc soure for 3.3V or 5v. But the issue do not solve.

  • Hi Liwei,

J39 is not needed when you provide supply voltage externally.

Current consumption of 68 mA means that the chip is working and is probably in ROM mode.

There seem to be a hardware problem in your setup, please also try to scan the device in program mode (DEVICE_ID).

If that does not work, then you have to replace your board or your USB interface Adapter.

Have you used this board or your adapter in any other occasions?

    Sorry for the trouble caused.

    Regards,

  • Hi again,

Before we give up, could you please look at the I2C/PMBus clock and data waveforms?

If you send me a capture of the waveforms, I can look at it and try to see what could be wrong.

    Regards,

  • Hi, Yitzhak Bolurian:

Yes,I know. When add jmper of J39, the Vdd supply with USB Adapter. Otherwide, the Vdd supply with dc source externally.

I also push the gui button of "scan device in rom" or "DEVICE ID'' . But the gui display error infomation "No Rom detected" or "No device found".

Yes, I think it is hardware setup issue. Because i have try to use the same USB interface adapter in other project. It is ok. So i think the issue com from the test board setup. After i read the use guide, i try a lot of way. And hope to you can give some advise.

you know the test board have lots of Pin. it can give us some help  for debug. so i want to use it for debug some idea.

I test the wave of PMBUS_CLK and PMBUS_DATA. The wave is high(3.3V). when i open the gui or push button of "scan device in rom" , the PMBUS_DATA line do not have data. Is iy right?

  • Hi Liwei,

So the Data and Clock lines stay hi all the time? Even when you scan for ROM?

    That is not right.

It should at least go low and show a waveform at the adapter ribbon cable connection side.

If you see the waveform at the adapter side, but not at the chip side, then there might be a disconnect between the two!

    Please advice.

    Regards,

  • Hi Liwei,

Have you had the chance to look at this further?

    Regards,

  • Hi Liwei,

Since I have not heard from you for a while, I am assuming that the issue is resolved.

In case you need further assistance, please open another post, or contact your local TI support to help you with replacement of the EVM board.
