TPS65216: compete part recommendation

Part Number: TPS65216
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BOOSTXL-TPS65218, LP87524-Q1

Hi Team,

Customer is evaluating one PMIC from other vendor, general specs are as follow:

5 Regulator Rails for 4 Buck Converters and 1 LDO

CH1 : Buck, 0.6V to 1.39375V with 6.25mV/Step,Output Current : 3A
CH2 : Buck, 1.1V/1.2V/1.35V/1.5V Set via External Resistor, Output Current : 2A
CH3 : Buck, Fixed 1.8V, Output Current : 1A
CH4 : Buck, Fixed 3.3V, Output Current : 2A
CH5: LDO, Adjustable via Resistor Divider, Output Current : 400mA

Based on this, could you recommend a suitable solution to compete with this?

Thanks and best Regards,

Will

  • What is being powered by the PMIC? We make recommendations based on the processor or SoC that we are powering, not a direct cross for a competitor's PMIC.

    What is the input voltage?

Output current should be determined by processor requirement, because the actual need is usually much less than the PMIC capability.

0.6V is very low for core rail voltage. I am not aware of any processors that currently support this voltage. Most are 0.75V or 0.72V but will still operate at 0.85V

    • TPS65216 is a good option, but it cannot deliver 2A or 3A on any rail (1.8A max). Also, VOUT,min = 0.85V
      • This is why knowing the target processor is important. TPS65216 EEPROM can be re-programmed using BOOSTXL-TPS65218 if you want to program samples and evaluate performance on prototype PCBs
    • LP87524-Q1 + External LDO is another option
      • For this design, an MCU would be required to control LP87524-Q1 device

This is one of the reasons we created the application report "How to Design Flexible Processor Power Systems Using PMICs" - to help explain different PMIC implementations.
