LM5160-Q1: What is special requirement for fly-buck converter compared with buck converter?

Part Number: LM5160-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM63625-Q1

Hi team,

It is really general question, not focuses on LM5160-Q1.

Could you tell me what special requirement is for fly-buck converter IC like LM5160-Q1 compared with buck converter IC like LM63625-Q1?

Does LM5160-Q1 have benefit for applying fly-buck converter? Otherwise, could we use other buck converter ICs for constructing fly-buck circuit?

Regards,
Ochi

  • Hi,

Basically PFM devices are not suitable for Flybuck because Flybuck topology needs a negative current when switching. Also flybuck converters are designed to have some special control for isolated output protection like short or over-voltage which buck converters might not have such design.
